Independence Day in San Felipe has a special charm that’s hard to put into words. As someone who moved here from the States looking for a quiet life by the sea, I never imagined how much the spirit of this place would draw me in. Now, every September, I find myself swept up in the energy, joining friends and neighbors in a celebration that’s both intimate and filled with pride.
The evening always begins with gatherings among family and friends, where the heart of the celebration truly lies. I’m often invited to a dinner or two, and the warmth of these gatherings is something I treasure. Walking into a home filled with laughter, the aroma of home-cooked dishes. There’s always a feast: tamales, pozole, chiles en nogada, each dish more delicious than the last. And though I didn’t grow up with these flavors, they’ve quickly become part of what I look forward to every year.
As the night goes on, you can feel the anticipation building, everyone counting down to midnight. We gather outside, sometimes in a backyard, sometimes on the malecón by the water, and wait for the “Grito de Independencia.” This is the moment that always takes my breath away. The first time I heard that shout – “¡Viva México!” – I felt an undeniable sense of awe. It’s a powerful moment, filled with pride and passion that echoes through the night.
Then, as soon as the last shout fades, the fireworks begin. The sky lights up in brilliant colors, reflecting off the Sea of Cortez, and everyone’s faces glow with excitement. The cheers, the clapping, the way people look up with such pride and joy.
Living in Mexico has taught me to appreciate celebrations like this, to understand the deep love people have for their country and their traditions. Independence Day here in San Felipe is more than just a holiday; it’s a heartfelt reminder of the warmth and pride that define this place.
